Disability Pride Month, celebrated every July, commemorates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) legislated in July 1990 to extend civil rights protections to people with disabilities. It is a time to celebrate people with disabilities and honor the history and achievements of the disability community.

OCES Celebrates 50-Year Milestone and Program Growth

More than 145 supporters gathered at Hotel 1620 Plymouth Harbor in Plymouth, MA last week to celebrate Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) 50th anniversary milestone, followed by  “50 Years of Care and Collaboration” luncheon and awards ceremony.

A nonprofit organization with offices in Brockton and Plymouth, OCES is the largest provider of in-home and community-based services for older adults and people living with disabilities in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Attendees included legislators, civic and business leaders, vendors, partner organizations, donors, and health care professionals. The event featured Life Is Good Playmaker Project creator Steve Gross as guest speaker, and 95.9 WATD Radio host Rob Hakala as emcee.

In recognition of OCES' 50th Anniversary, official citations were given by the following: Representative Mathew J. Muratore; and Representative Kathleen R. LaNatra; Michael Jackman, Office of Congressman William R. Keating. Legislative Aide James F. Breton presented the citation for the senate office for Senator Michael Brady; Senator Susan L. Moran; Senator Walter F. Timilty.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month - a time to create a better understanding of mental health issues and advocate for mental health services in our communities.

Times have changed. Mental health and self-care (caring for your own well-being) are now front and center on a national level. This is a good thing. However, it is important to continue the conversation and outreach on a local level to ensure that everyone has access to behavioral health services and supports.

April is National Volunteer Month, a time to celebrate and honor volunteers who help make a difference in the lives of so many and in the communities they serve.

Volunteers are all around, dedicating their time and effort to many different nonprofit organizations and causes. Volunteers have a beneficial influence in countless ways. For instance, volunteers provide daily meals to families in need and to homebound older adults; assist with home renovations for those not able to complete the work themselves; help shape a younger generation by reading to children; write letters of support to deployed U.S. service members; and help care for animals, the environment, and many other causes.

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) is celebrating 50 Years of Care and Collaboration with a special luncheon and awards presentation on May 1, 2024, at Hotel 1620 Plymouth Harbor.

Established in 1974, OCES is the largest provider of in-home and community-based services for older adults and people living with disabilities in Plymouth County and surrounding areas in Massachusetts. The agency has offices in Brockton and Plymouth.

The Grand Re-Opening of OCES Volunteer Center

More than 80 were in attendance for Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) Volunteer Center Grand Re-Opening event held Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

OCES' Volunteer Center, located at 204 South Meadow Road in Plymouth, serves as a central resource for Plymouth County volunteers as well as for local agencies offering volunteer opportunities.

March is Social Work Month, a time for celebrating the important profession of social work.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), social work is among the fastest growing professions in the United States. BLS projects that there will be almost 800,000 social workers in the United States by 2032, representing a seven percent rise over the decade.

Holiday Assistance Program Provides 300 Grocery Gift Cards to Individuals in Need

OCES fulfilled the food insecurity needs of hundreds in the community this holiday season through their Holiday Assistance Program.

OCES provided 300 grocery gift cards, valued at $100 each, to individuals in need throughout Brockton. This was supported by a generous grant from United Healthcare and funding from OCES’ Nutrition Department.
